Strong 7.1 quake registered east of Tonga - USGS

SINGAPORE, Oct 19 (Reuters) - A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 7.1 rocked a remote area of the South Pacific Ocean 195 km (120 miles) east of the island nation of Tonga on Sunday, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said on its website that the quake had been measured at a depth of 33 km and that no tsunami warning had been issued. (Editing by Paul Tait)
